Folks,
I'd like to congratulate Mark on passing his brown belt test. Mark tested for about an hour by:
* doing a basic 8 stance demo
* doing a falling and rolling demo
* demo'ing a variety of hand leverages and grab escapes
* doing 2 hand forms
* doing a staff form
* demo'ing a set of defensive blocking lessons
* demo'ing a set of offensive attack lessons
* doing a free-styling session with multiple attackers
* completing a Q and A session
I've place a few photos of the belt promotion at http://www.sansooafc.com/Photos.asp!
More photos coming from the promotion and class workout.
Jimmy H. Woo's San Soo Kung Fu is alive and well in the city of Orange and La Mirada CA!
Good job Mark!

you have a great site. I originally
studied with Larry Wikle for about four
years before shifting over to Dave Carter.
While I never knew Jack real well Ican
tell you that Jack and his brother Harry
are very well respected by Dave Carter and
anybody that spent any real time in the
art and has a brain. Dave by the way still
lives in Whittier California.

2010 Training
Train
Definition: To teach and form by practice; to educate; to exercise;
to practice
=====================================================
Here is one change folks can make. Train more days a week in San Soo Kung Fu. To excel at San Soo Kung Fu you must train with others who excel at San Soo Kung Fu.
If you are only training one day a week in San Soo Kung Fu then you are not training enough. If it is two days a week, guess what, it's better then one day a week but it's still not enough. Three days a week is the bare minimum needed to begin to learn San Soo Kung Fu. You really need to train 4 to 5 days a week to improve at San Soo Kung Fu while you are at the lower belt levels (white, yellow, green, brown, black). Do not fool yourself into thinking you can get by with less. After you receive your 1st degree (you have trained for one year
after you receive your black belt) then you MIGHT get away with three days a week.
And when I talk about training I do not mean just freestyle workouts at the studio. I mean, are you working your forms and basic 8 stances at home on your own? Do you write down and review your lessons and instructional points that your instructors gives you? Do you practice you lessons away from the studio as you review your personal lesson book?
Also, if you find yourself not improving, then go ask your instructor what you need to do to get past this training point. It may not be obvious to you but it will be to your instructor.
And just so you know I currently train two to three times a week in San Soo Kung Fu and I have been training in San Soo Kung Fu since 1988. I received my masters in 2000 then went and got recertified by another more senior 1st generation San Soo Kung Fu Master in 2008 who I had previously trained with but stopped due to his studio closing. Lastly, I still train with that senior 1st generation San Soo Kung Fu Master even though I'm a San Soo Kung Fu instructor myself. Why, because "EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD COACH" to keep them at the top of their game.

La Mirada San Soo Classes

Hello,
I'm currently looking for self-defense training that is near my location in Brea, CA. I have studied other forms of martial arts in my teens but have since not trained. I have heard good reports on the San Soo Style of fighting and I am seeking a place to train at. Do you offer classes on Wednesday and Saturday?
Do you offer forms and weapons training to beginning students or does a person need to student a while with you to receive such training? Response: December 26th 2009 at 10:12PM
Jesse,
I currently only teach classes on Monday and Wednesday at my La Mirada location. I have taught Saturday classes there also but due to small student Saturday classes I have stopped teaching on Saturday. If you bring a friend along I would gladly open a Saturday class again.
As to weapon training for new students. I normally teach hand forms and weapon forms to all attending students regardless of how long they have trained with me. Of course the new students are normally shown the hand forms first as they tend to be easier for students to pick up.
Just so you know, many San Soo Studios do not include weapons classes in there normal classes. You have to pay extra and attend a special class to get such training. But I feel any student of San Soo must be trained in weapons to even be considered a student of the art so I include it in my standard classes every Monday and Wednesday.
I suggest you come by one of my classes that are starting up in January 2010 on the 4th and 6th. Come by take a look see and ask questions. We have a small but dedicated group of students and welcome all interested individuals to come by and see what our group is all about!

I have trained in Krav Maga, Israeli combat fighting for two years. I recently moved to Pasadena and the Krav Maga schools are too far. I have taken an interest in San Soo Gung fu, there are a lot of similarities between both systems. Where can I train in a San Soo school nearby????? Response: December 18th 2009 at 8:35AM
I recommend that you go to my Saturday class in Covina, CA. Go to my classes page for enrollment information.

I'd like to thank John for coming out to my Monday class to allow me to explain how and why I teach San Soo Kung Fu the way I do. He asked a lot of great questions but in the end I think we concluded that he was better suited for training in a martial art that was more sport oriented.
San Soo Kung Fu is not a sport oriented art. As I told John, if you are fighting an attacker for longer then 5+ seconds then you are not fighting, you are dancing with that person.
Also, a fight is not won by the person who hits first, it is won by the person who hits last.

Studied San Soo since 1976. Really love it. Just a question. What about the those in the Chinese community that were taught by Jimmy in the days before the opening of the El Monte school. Didn't anyone else start a school or teach?

Hey Dale,
It's been a long time. I was just looking through KFSS stuff and opened this up. Congratulations on the new studio! You look like you are doing well and that's good. How is Jean and your 2 girls? How old are they now? Me busy with dental school at UCLA and have 2 more years to go. Also busy with my 15 month old daughter Marina. This dad thing is FUN! Anyway it's good to see you are doing well and I'll do my best to try and stay in touch with my old KF Bros. from the old Bellflower splashing hands studio! :) Do you have Scott's e-mail?
Damon
Response: June 23 2009 at 11:35PM
Damon,
It has been a long time my friend. You still in school I see. Dentistry is a good field to be in. I will email you privately about my wife and kids. Also try not to leave your phone number in public guestbooks. I deleted your number!

To Mark in Bellflower:
TaeHo is now teaching San Soo classes Monday and Thursday nights in Camarillo, CA at Twin Dragons Martial Arts Studio. You can get more info at his website, fourcornerskungfu.com.

|
I'm interested in taking private lessons.
What is your pricing? Oh, is there an extra travel charge if you travel to my location instead of me traveling to your location?
Contact me via my email address!
Response: May 3rd 2009 at 11:11PM
Terry,
I currently have an intro price for new students who are looking for private instruction in San Soo Kung Fu.
The intro price for one month is $25 per hour, minimum 1.5 hours per session.
This price is good for your first month of private training.

To all,
I would like to give a big congratulations to Raul Morales on his black belt promotion.
He worked hard to get this and after much convincing he tested for his black belt and passed. Photos will be online soon.
I'm a big believer on testing students at all levels for belt promotions. It takes more effort by the instructors, but it is worth it as students work to get their belts.
Again, Raul worked hard to get this promotion and it is well deserved. He performed:
Three hand forms
One weapon form
Answered many concept questions
Did a freestyle workout for 15 minutes
Demonstrated a variety of hand leverage, escapes and open lessons
And performed a variety of other task all over an hour period
And a special thank you goes out to Mark Tenorio for being such a great demo partner.
Great effort Raul!

The ancient art of Kung Fu San Soo is a Chinese Style of hand-to-hand combat developed and refined over thousand years. San Soo utilizes the hard and soft, linear and circular, internal and external, mental and physical. Come learn how the concepts of San Soo can change the way you think about self-defense.

Dale,
I am enjoying your La Mirada class and learning the finer techniques of San Soo. As you know I studied under two other masters before and by far your training and insight is superior. I encourage anyone to train under you!
Response: January, 29th 2009 at 2:16PM
Hey Raul,
You are coming along nicely in your training. The staff form looks good and all you need to do is get past this last fancy spinning section and you are good to go.
Thanks for the recommendation, it's means a lot coming from you as you have studied San Soo from two 1st generation masters before landing at my studio/classes in La Mirada.

I am looking for a Kung Fu San Soo Master in the Atlanta, GA area. Any assistance you can give me with be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jonathan
Response: December, 25th 2008 at 10:32AM
Hello Jonathan,
We know of no San Soo instructors in that area that we could recommend.
You could buy the Basic 45 DVD set from www.sansookungfu.com and then find a partner to train with but you really need a good instructor to learn Kung Fu San Soo correctly.

Hello Dale,
I would like to discuss more the concept of angles of punching, and proper absorbing/reacting to these punches. Very good info you showed me.
Thanks,
Dave
Response: November, 26th 2008 at 2:55AM
Hello Dave,
I can tell you one thing about reacting to your partners strikes. If they hit you with a real full body San Soo strike and you stand there and try to play superman you are going to lose that battle. Now I know you may think hey I've taken some hard strikes/punches over the years and they did not damage me, but those were coming from folks who only knew how to hit with their arms and probably did not use much else. Those upper body only strikes/punches may be painful but a real full body punch will damage you externally and internally.
By full body I mean a strike/punch that starts at the feet and moves through the legs as you press/drive into a horse and moves through the hips as they rotate and then up through the body and out through your rotating shoulders then finally issued through your arm and hand. Well this type of strike/punch will hurt you if you stand there and try to superman it. You will get damaged externally and internally. So to take that type of punch you better know how to sense it... then move with it... and finally absorb it.
I learned how to do this by studying the Basic 45 (or Ah Soo) many years ago and perfected it through many more years of studying San Soo. When I first started learning the Basic 45 (or Ah Soo) we worked out hard and fast and to survive you had to learn how to move with the strike and react with proper responses. If you did not then your were peeing blood the next day or worse... you ended up peeing blood and had some broken bones also.
I tell you this not to impress you but to stress to you the importance of learning this important concept. To do this actually involves a lot of different concepts. Too many to explain here. Next time we workout together I can start to go over some of the concepts which will enable you to handle a properly thrown full body San Soo strike/punch.
