 La Mirada CA

We serve the City of La Mirada CA via community classes at 13710 La Mirada Blvd, La Mirada, CA 90638. These Kung Fu San Soo classes are taught at the La Mirada Community Center right behind the La Mirada City Hall building. This building hosts many types of community classes. You can register for the Kung Fu San Soo classes by talking to the friendly La Mirada Community Center staff at the front desk. Our classes are usually located in classroom 3 or 2. We meet every Monday and Wednesday from 7:15 pm to 9:00 pm. The workout area is about 1000 square feet. The format of the classe begins with students starting to freestyle with one or two people working at half speed to full speed. After about a half hour into the class the students are taught a lesson from the "45 Lesson Set". That lesson is worked on for about 10 to 15 minutes and then more details are given for that lesson. Details such as how to do the lesson with proper timing and cadence, basing the lesson from different attacks without mirroring and varitions to the base lesson are given. After the students work on these additional details the class is stopped and a more advance lesson is given. Toward the end of class students practice the basic stance form, "Basic 8" and a more advance 26 movement hand form. When time permits weapon forms are taught. Weapons like the staff, baton, chais, broadsword, Jing are presented to students who have already learned the current class hand form.

I have been a student of San Soo off and on since 1973 beginning at the age of 13. I was originally taught at the Frank Woolsey Downey Studio for a short time.

Over the years I was the student of two fine Masters who I have a lot of respect for. They are both Jimmy Woo taught.

In 2008 I began studing under Master Garrison. Since then my ablilties and understanding of this fascinating art has grown by leaps and bounds.

Master Garrison understands the physical science behind San Soo. He has made this art his life's passion. I have seen Master Garrisons students excel quickly into outstanding San Soo practitioners. In my profession as a law enforcement officer, i can say that Master Garrison's teaching is a great way to learn self defense.

Master Garrisons class is fun and safe. He cares about all of his students well being and gets to know everyone on a personal basis. If you are serious about learning San Soo you cant go wrong with Master Garrison's La Mirada class. You will be welcomed. Come join the fun.

Master Garrison teaches my 13 year old personally. He learns self defense that are applicable in real life situations. A great teacher!

The useful skill/knowledge of how to defend yourself if need to be was a great confidence builder for my son.

Thanks Master Garrison!

My personal San Soo instruction, from Master Garrison, has always been to-the-point, hands-on, and very informative as to all the variables. When I first started attending San Soo classes, he was there to instruct me in all parts of the "ABC's" of this discipline. Because of this instruction, within a year, I learned the "basic 8" footwork, I had received all of the "45" lessons, a number of "walk-up" lessons, two of the hand forms, and one of the staff forms.

The style and speed of the class is really dictated by how fast the students absorb the teaching, and I really appreciate that. There was never a need to stay on schedule with regard to the lesson. The lesson plan was never more important than the students. Master Garrison always made sure we were certain of ourselves and allowed us to ask as many questions as we needed to wrap our brains around a certain fighting concept.

A typical class day begins with: a stretch and warm-up, then a freestyle work out amongst the students (usually the previous lesson or whatever), then a roll-call and a "45" lesson, the students adaption of this "45" lesson, an advanced lesson (usually in the form of a walk-up) , leg work (basic 8), followed by hand and staff forms.

The class works out hard but respects personal limits (i.e. size, age, weight). There is always something for everyone. The teacher makes himself very available to talk to. You will most definitely get back exactly what you yourself put in to this class.

I highly recommend this class to any novice or advanced learner of San Soo. The real-world price of the class is unmatched for this kind of instruction. La Mirada AFC is part of a very welcoming, friendly, and thought provoking community of other studios that focus on attaining excellence through discipline. They hold amazing seminars that attract people from all over the country to come and learn from them.

I hope you take this class and discover this for yourself.

If you are interested in practicing/learning martial arts...this just might be the place for you...not only is the environment at the La Mirada Community Center a very clean and safe one, Master Dale Garrison has created an atmosphere in which his students can learn at an accelerated rate but also in a fun and non threatening manner. Dale simply has a wealth of knowledge that he is willing to pass on and share with others...i cannot believe how much i have learned in the time that i have been participating in Master Dale's instruction of San Soo Kung Fu!

My good friend, I congratulate you on the great web site you have designed, and knowing you it can only get better. You are a rare individual in the art of San Soo, for you have chosen to remaster by training with the best, Jack Sera. This is what I call learning "Best Practices" and the fortunate ones who will learn "Best Practices" are your students.

I have seen San Soo students from other studios, and I find them to lack an understanding of the simple fundamentals of San Soo. They lack an understanding of shoulder rotation to bring their opponent of balance, usage of their legs to produce power when needed, H.T.D.F., and much more. For those of you that would like to know what H.T.D.F. stands for, you need to ask Dale Garrison or Jack Sera for the answer.

To many San Soo practitioners compensate their inadequacy of the art by using power in an attempt to make their technique(s) work. The problem is that students and San Soo Master who lack "Best Practices" do not understand that power comes from using proper mechanics. If one were to observe Jack Sera (Jimmy Woo's top student) they would observe how power is produce by using the proper mechanics. The reason they have good mechanics is because they understanding the fundamentals of the art and know how to apply it.

The proper fundamentals of San Soo lie in the foundation of the art Tsoi, Li, Hoi, Fut, Hung, Ga, and many students lack this foundation. These students may be able to defend themselves against the average Joe if lucky, but not against a fighter. A poorly trained San Soo student is like creating a structure that has a weak foundation, that structure will fall when the elements of nature leashes its fury. On the other hand, a well-trained student is like a strong structure, which can withstand what ever the elements throw at it.

Dale, I understand why you decided to get recertified, if I where in your shoes I would too. There is nothing that can take the place of learning from the best of the best. I just wish there were more Masters who would let go of their egos and get recertified and improve themselves by using "Best Practices." If that were to happen then these masters would have students developing a good San Soo foundation and applying proper techniques.

My good friend, your students are very fortunate to have you as an instructor, for they will benefit from your teachings, and knowing you, they will develop a strong foundation that very few students have in our art.

Best wishes and good fortune!

Sincerely,

Cesar
